On Saturday, February 6th at 7 p.m., three Ozaukee high school A Cappella teams will compete against each other in the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School A Cappella Quarterfinal Competition, held at the Port Washington High School Auditorium.
Limited Editon, Port Washington High School's a cappella group, will face Cedarburg's Bella Voce and Grafton High School's Graftonics, for the first time. No stranger to competition, Limited Edition has won the semifinal competition four times in the last six years, as well as the 2010 championship. The popularity of a cappella music has skyrocketed, mainly due to the films, Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2, starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. In fact, Limited Edition was selected by Deke Sharon, the Musical Director of Pitch Perfect, to open the Vocalosity concert last month in Green Bay. The top two finishers in the quarterfinal competition will move on to compete in the regional semifinals in March, while the winner of the semifinals will go to the championship competition in New York at the end of April. Tickets to the concert can be purchased from the Varsity Vocals website, and are $10/student and $15/adult. The Friday Fish Fry is a Wisconsin tradition but, historically, it is a Roman Catholic invention. Friday, because of Good Friday; Fish, because it is a time of sacrifice, so no meat; and Fry, because...well, because fried food is yummy, and it's easy to make a lot all at once! Though there are plenty of local restaurants that serve up a good Friday Fish Fry, during this season, many of the area churches will be getting in on the action, and everyone in the community is invited. St. Mary's Church opens their doors in the St. Mary's School cafeteria at 446 N. Johnson St. in Port Washington on Friday, January 29th, from 4:30-7:30. They offer beer battered haddock, shrimp or baked poor man's lobster for $11 for adults and $5/child. In a hurry? They even have a drive-thru option - just call ahead at (262) 284-2441. Should you choose to dine in, there are plenty of options for the non-fish lovers in your life, including a salad bar, baked potato, cheese pizza, and macaroni and cheese for just $5/adult and $3/child. Port Catholic will host the remainder of the Fish Fry dates at the same location: February 19th, March 4th and March 18th. Divine Savior Catholic School in Fredonia also hosts a Friday Fish Fry beginning January 29th from 4:30-8 p.m. at the Divine Savior Catholic School at 305 Fredonia Ave. Adults are $11, Seniors $10 and $6 for children. Carry out is available by calling (262) 692-2141, and includes 5 pieces of fish, potatoes, coleslaw and rye bread. Homemade desserts, coffee, and milk are available to those eating in. The remaining Fish Fry dates are: February 12th and 26th, and March 11th and 18th. St. Joseph, 1619 Washington Street in Grafton, has their Fish Fry February 12th, 19th and 26th, and March 4th and 11th from 4:30-7:45. Traditional potato pancakes are served, and the public is welcome to dine in or carry out. A 3 piece baked Icelandic cod or beer battered cod is $10, or a 4 piece fried lake perch or 6 piece jumbo fried shrimp is available for $11. A 2 piece fried walleye is available for $12. Kids meals are available for $5, and all meals include cole slaw, potatoes, rye bread and butter, as well as coffee, milk, and desserts (while they last). Happy Fishing!! The Belgium Area Chamber of Commerce, Village of Belgium, and Luxembourg American Cultural Center will have their 2nd Annual European Christmas, this Saturday, December 5th, from 4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
The event begins with a parade at 4:30, beginning at Beech Street and ending at Peter Thein. Then, head to the Village Square for children's activities, offered by the Belgium Community Club. In the heated tent, visitors will find hot chocolate; food from Bic's Place, The Cedar Beach Inn, and Lake Church Pub and Grill; and, homemade crafts from local vendors. There will be a Christmas tree lighting and caroling, as well as a bonfire by the Belgium Fire Department. It is also rumored that St. Nick will be in attendance! Christmas is happening in Port Washington this Saturday, December 6th, and there is something for everyone! The day starts with the Port Washington Indoor Farmers Market, from 9-1 at the First Congregational Church on Webster Street. In addition to the usual local food and goods, the market will have Christmas Cookies for sale, as well as the beautiful piano music of local wonder, Anthony Deutsch. If you haven't gotten your Christmas tree yet, you can get one right outside the church. If that's not one-stop local Christmas shopping, I don't know what is! Port Washington's annual Christmas on the Corner begins at 3 p.m. Meet live reindeer, and see a live nativity, or take a carriage ride through beautiful downtown Port Washington. Carolers will sing, and many of the local businesses will have special attractions and sales, including an Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt for kids! Kids can write their letters to Santa at the Blue Heron Artisans, or decorate cookies at Dockside Deli. They can also get their picture taken with Elsa and Anna (of Frozen fame) at Biever Travel, or a photo with Santa at Port Washington State Bank. Gallery 224 Studios, located in the lower level of the Boerner Building, will be hosting a reception and open house during the event for their latest exhibit, "Family Matters." Visitors can tour the studio and darkroom, and meet the current Artists in Residence. Visitors who help decorate the tree at the Port Exploreum and make a donation to the Food Pantry will receive a wristband to watch the fireworks from the 2nd floor deck. The tree lighting kicks-off the parade at 6:15 p.m., followed by Ozaukee's only winter fireworks, right on the lakefront! This is an event you don't want to miss. Learn more at visitportwashington.com, or call (262) 268-1132. Tonight from 5-8 pm, the Cedarburg Merchant Organization will kick off the holiday season with luminaries to light up Washington Avenue, and free carriage rides for visitors to take in the sights. Many of the businesses who participated in the CMO's #TCIF (Think Cedarburg It's Friday) campaign will be open until 8 or 9 pm every Friday from tonight through December 18th. The event is in conjunction with the first of the Five Festive Friday Eves, which happen from 5-9 pm at the Cedar Creek Settlement, where the theme tonight is A Celtic Christmas. There will be music by local Irish singer, Derek Byrne, as well as Irish Dancing from students at the Beglan Academy of Irish Dance. Mary Ann Miller will play the harp from 6-8 pm, and Kapco is having their Kids 2 Kids Christmas Toy Drive. For each toy donation, participants will receive a Settlement Sack of Savings. Several downtown merchants will have their own, in-store festivities this evening. Cedarburg Toy Co. is hosting local personality and children's book author, Rob Haswell, in the store for a book signing, and the Cedarburg Art Museum will host demonstrating Wisconsin artists, Michelle Savas Thompson, Pamela Ruschman, and Barb Wagner, and a make-and-take craft and scavenger hunt for kids. |
