By Lisa Stewart The baaree is located behind the cheel in Thiensville, which was recently rebuilt after a fire in 2020 completely destroyed the restaurant. Because the baaree is an outdoor patio space, it is open seasonally. There is live music most of the days of the week that leans heavily towards blues music, and there is no shortage of amazing blues musicians in the area! The baaree features a full bar, as well as its own menu, on the patio. I'm partial to the nachos with the brie cheese sauce, but this time I also tried the wagyu beef sliders and loved them, too; the goat cheese paired really well. You can also order from the cheel and eat it on the patio. On chillier nights, there are heaters located around the patio and some seating around gas fire pits, so the outdoor season can be extended into spring and fall. Seating is a mix of tables, bar seating & outdoor sofas. I recommend getting there early on weekends since it tends to fill up during the music. It is also a dog friendly space. There is something a little magical about walking into this space, with the gate, greenery, lights, and fire -- it feels a little like entering a secret garden. That feeling has only increased now that it’s hidden behind the cheel. The music at the baaree is top notch and this weekend was no exception. Pierre “Mr. Untouchable” Lee is a frequent performer at the baaree and he played the first set of the day. He is from the Milwaukee area and keeps people dancing all day. He plays a mix of funk and blues with great audience interaction. My musician friend called the band ‘greasy,’ which apparently is a compliment for musicians. The second set was by the Mississippi Leg Hounds, who claim to be from Mississippi, WI. This was my first time seeing them. They played more of an R&B and blues set. It was a really eclectic set that kept me interested in what they would be playing next. I was a fan of the lead singer’s voice. Also, any band that brings a 32” gong gets my attention! I recommend the baaree for anyone looking for a great live music experience in Ozaukee County! The barree is located at 105 S. Main St in Theinsville, you can find more information at www.thebaaree.com. Memorial Day is a time to honor those who gave their lives in military service to our country, but it wasn't always that way. The tradition began after the Civil War, for honoring soldiers of both sides who had died. After World War I, the tradition was changed to honor all those Americans who died fighting in any war. It was officially made a holiday in 1971, giving us the three day weekend that has come to be associated with the beginning of summer, store sales, and barbecues. In recent years, communities have returned to the roots of this holiday, and it has regained some of the solemn feel of its origins. Oz has several parades and ceremonies to attend -- here are the details: Belgium Memorial Day will begin with Mass at 8:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 200 Park St. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Main St. at East Lane, followed by a program at Community Park at 11 a.m., located at 106 Beech St. A cookout will be held afterwards by the American Legion Melvin Wester Post 412. Saukville The Landt-Thiel American Legion Post 470 will hold a prayer service at Union Cemetery at 8 a.m., then lead the parade which begins at 9 a.m. from nearby Riverside Park and ends at Veterans Park on East Green Bay Ave. for a ceremony. Lunch will be served following the ceremony at the Legion Post at 601 S. Dekora St. Port Washington The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. from Wisconsin and Main Streets, and continues along Grand Ave. to Veterans Park on the lakefront for a program, where the Port Washington High School and Thomas Jefferson Middle School Band will play patriotic songs. The Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post 82 will provide hot dogs, soda and ice-cream free of charge at the club house across from the park following the program. Grafton The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Grafton American Legion Rose Harms Post 335 and continue to Veteran's Memorial Park for a ceremony at 11 a.m.. A luncheon will be served at the Legion Hall following the ceremony. Cedarburg The Cedarburg American Legion will hold their annual parade, starting at 9 a.m. from the corner of Bridge Rd. and Washington Ave. The parade will be followed by a ceremony at the Peter Wollner Post 288 located at W57 N481 Hilbert Ave. Everyone is invited. Mequon/Thiensville The Howard J. Schroeder American Legion Post 457 will lead a ceremony at 10 a.m. at Mequon City Hall; there will be no parade this year. Lunch to follow at the Legion Post, located at 4060 W. Mequon Road. Happy Memorial Day, everyone. Over 100 years ago (in 1914, to be exact), President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day an official holiday. As one might guess, it didn't take long for restaurants, florists, and confectioners to get in on it. In fact, the woman who campaigned for the holiday, Anna Jarvis, was so disgusted by the commercialization of the holiday that she spent the rest of her life fighting to remove it from the calendar. Of course, Mother's Day is here to stay, so if you're going to spend your money, you may as well do it locally, and there are plenty of good restaurants, florists, and confectioners in Oz to choose from, as well as other special offers from local businesses and organizations! Port Washington Moonlight Tavern is offering a special Mother's Day menu from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with choices such as Prime Rib and Bottomless Mimosa. Tello's in Port offers a special Mother's Day Menu both Saturday and Sunday during their regular hours, and it is available for carry out. Beanies offers a free mimosa for mom on Mother's Day, but also has a weekend of fun planned, starting with live music on Friday and drink specials on Saturday just for moms. If you're looking for chocolates in Port, Chocolate Chisel has a wide variety of milk and dark chocolates to choose from, as well as chocolate dipped strawberries (pre-ordering is recommended). Jewelry can be found at Sharbuno Jewelers. Both Pear & Simple and Locally Inspired have great gifts and Locally Inspired is offering a Flour & Petals Spring Pop Up Bakery the day before Mother's Day, as well. Finally, shop DreamPort Harvest Market on Saturday from 9-4 for Mother's Day bouquets and seedlings for the garden! Saukville MJ's Bar & Grill has a Mother's Day Brunch from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., featuring a complimentary "Mom-Mosa". For flowers, try Lighthouse Florist in Saukville. Grafton The Stillery in Grafton has a special Mother's Day menu featuring pan seared scallops, herb crusted salmon, chorizo stuffed chicken breast, plus a strawberry cheesecake! The Bloomin Olive is where to go for flowers in the Grafton area, and Sweet Trio and Handmade With Love has all the sweet treats mom might want. Mequon - Thiensville Cafe 1505 is serving a special Mother's Day Brunch with multiple seatings. Reservations are required -- call (262) 241-7076). The Foxtown Station has a Mother's Day Brunch Buffet that is all you can eat -- reservations are required; find them in the link. La Terre at the Mequon Public Market is the place to go for blooms and Cocoa Tree Confectionery is the place to get chocolate and sweets. Barthel's Fruit Farm is a great place to shop for flowers and seedlings, and they will have their Beer Garden open 9-5 on Saturday and Sunday for Mother's Day weekend. Head to Thiensville for Frankie's Makers Market on Saturday the 11th, which is another great place to get a gift for Mom! Cedarburg The Shops of Cedar Creek Settlement are having a special Mother's Day Weekend, the 11th and 12th, featuring treats, prizes, specials, samples, wine tastings and live entertainment just for mom! There's always a special caramel apple from Amy's Candy Kitchen or classic candies from Ashley's Confectionery to make mom's day, and flowers from Rachel's Roses. Armbruster Jewelers is, of course, a main stay for jewelry, but there are so many great jewelry and gift stores in Cedarburg, you could just take mom through them all and let her pick out just the right thing. Waubeka The Waubeka Historic District Association will have a brat fry and Mother's Day Bouquet Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11th, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., which is a great way to get your lunch as a Mother's Day gift for a good cause! If Mom is an outdoorsy type, she may prefer a hike at Lion's Den Gorge in Grafton, Sauk Creek Nature Preserve in Port, Harrington Beach State Park in Belgium, or a nature preserve such as Riveredge in Saukville or Mequon Nature Preserve.
